To Serve and Protect
The Beckley Police Department recently welcomed its newest four-legged member, a two-year-old female bloodhound named Artemis” AKA Artie”
Artie was obtained by the Beckley Police Department from 832 K-9 Deputy Dogs Kody Snodgrass Foundation, for the purpose of human tracking. The bloodhound breed is best known for its innate ability to track and follow any scent—including human—for great distances. Bloodhounds use a combination of human odor and ground disturbance to locate fleeing criminals or a missing endangered person.
Our police department has had great success working with German Shepherds and Rottweiler’s, dogs known for alerting their handlers to drugs and suspect apprehension. The opportunity arose for us to further our police work by obtaining a bloodhound through the 832 Deputy Dog Kody Snodgrass Foundation. The initial start-up costs were donated through the Kody Snodgrass Memorial Foundation, Inc. The continued cost of training and equipment was purchased with donations from friends in the community for $3000.00.
Artie was purchased in January and spent months training with other bloodhounds in Florida and Alabama before joining the Beckley Police Department.
Beckley Police officers Jonathan Legursky and Cpl. Will Reynolds received training by instructors in Florida and Alabama on the use of a Police Bloodhound.
Ptl Jonathan Legursky is the assigned bloodhound handler.
The Beckley Police Department wishes to thank the community and following donors for its continued support of the Beckley Police Department K-9 unit:
