| Although a great deal of initial training is given toeveryswornofficer,it is vital that education continue throughout an officer’s career. This is becausecriminal trends, new technologies and Department goals and objectives are continually constantly evolving. Police investigation methods and the tools utilized must progress simultaneously with the surrounding environment. The Beckley Police Department strives to meet these changes as they occur by providing the very latest training to our officers by way of in-service training. | ![]() |

Advanced technology has greatly increased sophistication
of criminal activity at all levels, often requiring officers to approach their
subsequent investigations from varying perspectives. In addition to this
evolving criminal activity, increased public and judicial expectations require
police to stay abreast of social and legal expectations.
Continuing education shows a commitment to, and the importance attached by the Department to training to ensure its officers remain current with the advancements of society to better meet the needs of the community. |

The pursuit of continued education allows members to expand their learning skills, thus stimulating their problem-solving skills, and broadening their perspective. While continued education benefits the officer, it also benefits the Department and the public, as they apply the principals learned to daily duties.
